Nothing beats a fresh, crisp salad or a hearty sandwich, but it can be infuriating to be halfway through preparing lunch only to find the lettuce has gone limp. Lettuce tends to deteriorate rapidly due to its high water content, making it a breeding ground for bacteria and mould if not properly stored in the fridge.
Nevertheless, food storage expert Amy claims that there is a straightforward method to store these leafy greens to maintain their freshness for extended periods – simply take a few minutes to wash them correctly. Taking to her Facebook page, The Cross Legacy, Amy wrote: “Lettuce and other greens can stay fresh for up to a month if they are washed and stored correctly. I wash lettuce in a vinegar wash (half a cup of 5% distilled white vinegar and 10 cups of water) for two minutes and then lay it out to dry.
“Once it is completely dry, I store it in an airtight glass container in my fridge. Even about a month later, it is still crunchy!
“I get asked about lettuce all of the time because I know that it is an item that often goes bad in people’s homes. If this is you, give these steps a try, and you will be amazed at how long your lettuce lasts!”
Vinegar doesn’t just add flavour to salads – it also possesses antimicrobial qualities, and cleaning lettuce with a small amount of this solution will eliminate grime that might be hiding within the leaves.
Properly washing lettuce helps stop bacteria from causing premature spoilage and maintains freshness for up to seven days longer, and rest assured, it won’t alter the flavour if cleaned correctly.
It’s crucial to only leave the lettuce leaves for just two minutes and not any longer, otherwise you risk giving the leaves a vinegary aftertaste.
Once the time is up, promptly remove the leaves from the solution and rinse thoroughly under tap water.
If you have a salad spinner, spin the lettuce leaves dry. If not, place the lettuce leaves in a colander and shake off any excess moisture.
Next, lay the lettuce leaves on some kitchen paper or clean tea towels and let them air dry. Once you are certain they are thoroughly dry, place them in an airtight glass container.
The container will serve as a shield to protect the lettuce, helping it stay fresh. Place it in the fridge, and your lettuce will remain crispy and fresh for 30 days rather than wilting within a day.
