Zerodha founder and Chief Executive Officer Nithin Kamath on Friday credited the success of his company to the Free and Open-Source Software (FOSS) ecosystem, calling it the foundation of the brokerage firm’s technology stack and core operations.

“Suffice to say, without Free and Open-Source Software (FOSS), there would be no Zerodha,” Kamath posted on microblogging site X (formerly Twitter).

Kamath said Zerodha’s technology stack is entirely built on open-source software, which underpins its role as a key player in India’s retail broking sector. The company currently manages around Rs 6 lakh crore in assets and accounts for nearly 15% of the country’s daily retail exchange volumes.

Beyond using open-source technologies, Kamath said the company has actively contributed “code, money, and time” to existing FOSS projects. Zerodha has also launched a $1 million per year fund to support critical open-source software globally.

The company has open-sourced several in-house technologies, Kamath added, with many of them now used by global enterprises, universities, and governments. He noted that Zerodha continues to support the FOSS community in India through efforts like the FOSS United Foundation.“It wouldn’t be an overstatement to say that 4th Cross JP Nagar is a hotbed of FOSS activity in India along with Broking!” Kamath said, referring to Zerodha’s headquarters in Bengaluru.Kamath shared a link to the firm’s open-source projects in the post, highlighting Zerodha’s broader push to promote transparency and collaboration in fintech development.
